Here are my top tips on what to wear for your FAMILY photoshoot

BRING THE SNACKS & A CHANGE OF CLOTHING

When photographing children at family photoshoots, it’s all about keeping things light and fun! Encourage natural interactions by letting kids play, explore, and be themselves—it helps capture genuine smiles and candid moments. Bring along a favorite toy or snack to keep them comfortable, and don’t stress if they’re a little wiggly; sometimes the best photos come from those spontaneous, unposed moments. Patience is key, and turning the shoot into a game or adventure can make all the difference in keeping them engaged and happy.

TIPS FOR CHILDREN

If your photoshoot is at the beach, don't forget the towels and a change of clothing for not just the children but also for the adults too. there is a high chance you'll need it. Most importantly, bring a backup outfit just in case of spills or unexpected messes or even change when you arrive instead of travelling in your outfits!

WHAT TO WEAR

The most important thing is to wear something that feels like you. These photos are about capturing your connection, so you want to feel comfortable and confident. If you’re not into dressing up, that’s totally fine—a relaxed look can be just as stunning as something more formal.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Avoid Logos & Bright Tones

Aim for complementary colors and styles instead of matching outfits. Think of it like creating a beautiful color palette rather than wearing identical clothes. Neutral tones, earthy shades, and soft pastels work beautifully against Northland’s natural scenery.

Avoid bold logos, loud patterns, or anything too flashy that might distract from your connection. Subtle textures and simple prints can add a nice touch without taking over the frame. Bright green, orange and pink can also reflect those tones onto your skin in bright weather.

Consider The Location

Hair, Makeup & Nails

Whether we’re shooting on a windswept beach, in a forest grove, or at a cozy spot that’s special to you both, dress accordingly! Flowing dresses or skirts look amazing with a bit of movement, while comfy boots and layers are perfect for forest or countryside vibes.

Go with whatever makes you feel most confident—whether that’s a full glam look or something more natural. Make sure nails are clean, bring wipes for the kids and sometimes it's even worth making sure that dads arms and hands are moisterized!

Layers Add Interest

Movement

Layers and accessories add depth and give you more variety in your photos—think jackets, cardigans, scarves, or hats that can be added or removed. Accessories like necklaces, watches, or even a favorite hat can add a personal touch without being overpowering.

We’ll be moving around, walking, laughing, maybe even dancing—so make sure you can move freely and feel good doing it! Clothes that allow for natural movement look great in candid shots but try avoiding dresses that will ride up and expose anything you'd prefer covered.

COLOUR IS EVERYTHING

This color palette guide will help you coordinate outfits that not only complement each other but also enhance the natural, authentic vibe of your photos, making sure you both look and feel your best.

Choosing the right colors can make a big difference in how your photos turn out! Make sure to consider whether the tones you like will look great in your home and at your chosen location.
